New supermarket for Holt approved

Today, councillors on North Norfolk District Council’s Development Committee unanimously approved an application from **Lidl GB Ltd.** for a new supermarket in Holt. The new food store is planned for **Nightjar Way, just off the A148**. At the same meeting, a separate application from **Aldi Stores Ltd.** for a supermarket at Old Station Way was refused, with councillors raising concerns over highways infrastructure. Planning officers had recommended that the Development Committee approve only one of the two supermarket proposals rather than allowing both developments to proceed. Speaking in support of the Lidl application, a representative of **Holt Town Council** highlighted the pressures of the cost of living and the potential benefits of bringing a more affordable food retailer to the town. The accessibility of the Nightjar Way site was also raised, including its suitability for people using mobility scooters. The council received **228 public representations** relating to the Lidl application, with **186 in support**. Supporters cited the need for a more affordable supermarket in Holt, greater retail choice and competition, and the potential to reduce the number of residents travelling to neighbouring towns for their main food shopping. Plans for the site also include a **120-space car park, electric vehicle charging points and cycle storage**. The development is expected to create around **40 jobs**, providing an additional boost to the local economy in Holt and the surrounding area. A representative of Lidl GB Ltd. told the committee that the company expects work on the development to begin **within the coming weeks**, with the new store anticipated to be completed within **several months**.
